Amongst being the month which we celebrate Halloween, or maybe a birthday of someone you know, October is If you know someone close to you who has been affected, you probably know how scary it can seem. But the purpose of this campaign is to let EVERYONE understand the impacts of it. So, what is breast cancer? Breast cancer is an uncontrollable growth of breast cells. So why would this ever happen? Mutations in your cells can mess with your DNA - the stuff which defines who we are. It can turn on genes, as well as turn others off, and one outcome of this is that they simply start dividing uncontrollably and form a tumour, instead of replacing themselves when needed as they should. Not all tumours are harmful - only malignant tumours have the potential to cause harm; these tumours can spread to other parts of the body and invade nearby tissues. Breast cancer is a malignant tumour that has developed from cells in the breast. Eventually, the tumour grows and spready to the lymph nodes - these filter out foreign substances in your body, and once the breast cancer spreads to here they have a way of travelling much further round the body. Breast cancer affects both women AND MEN, so anyone is vulnerable to it. About 1,990 new cases of invasive breast cancer were diagnosed in men in 2008! So, enjoy the site's special new theme for this month and I hope you learnt something from my talk. Please, feel free to discover more for yourself (links below) or share your own experiences in the comments section. Thank you for your time ~The NH Team |
