I think this does have potential, but maybe it's cause you scanned it - but the colours haven't all filled in properly
also I personally find that subtle changes to the colour are much more effective. E.g. in a gradient, go from dark grey to a slightly lighter grey, rather than black to white
Still, I like the idea - good job
Cool picture, I really like the background too.
